Renowned singer Ayodeji Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, has taken a stand against critics who have criticized him for rejecting the label of being an afrobeat artist.
The musician faced backlash after publicly denouncing the categorization of his music as solely afrobeats.
In a recent post addressing his detractors, Wizkid urged them to broaden their understanding and conduct research rather than resorting to ignorance. He emphasized the need to explore the diversity of music and experiences beyond narrow perceptions.
Defending his stance, Wizkid asserted that while he proudly identifies as African, his musical repertoire transcends the confines of a single genre. He expressed frustration with being pigeonholed into the afrobeats category, likening it to assuming that all American artists exclusively produce rap music.
Wizkid emphasized the importance of artistic freedom and experimentation, highlighting that his album “Made in Lagos” is not limited to afrobeats but incorporates a fusion of various sounds, representing his versatility as an artist.
