Amid escalating insecurity in Nigeria’s Northern region, particularly in Kaduna and Borno states, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has thrown its support behind the dialogue efforts proposed by Kaduna-based Muslim cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, to engage with bandits responsible for abducting 287 schoolchildren from Kuriga Government Secondary and LEA Primary Schools in Kaduna State.

The recent surge in attacks saw insurgents kidnapping 200 internally displaced women in Borno and the mass abduction of pupils and teachers in Kaduna within less than 24 hours, highlighting the urgent need for intervention.

Sheikh Gumi, renowned for his peace advocacy, urged President Bola Tinubu to allow negotiations with the bandits, emphasizing the importance of dialogue to prevent further abductions. However, the federal government asserted its stance against paying ransom for the release of abducted schoolchildren, prioritizing their safe return.

NEF’s spokesman, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, stressed the significance of supporting Gumi’s initiative to bring about a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Kaduna. He clarified that engaging in dialogue with bandits doesn’t equate to condoning their actions but rather aims to de-escalate the situation and save lives.

Suleiman highlighted the potential benefits of dialogue, including understanding bandits’ grievances and motivations, leading to the safe release of hostages. Moreover, opening communication lines could address underlying issues such as poverty and marginalization, contributing to the cycle of violence.

He emphasized that while controversial, dialogue with bandits could be a necessary step in conflict resolution, ensuring the safety of hostages and preventing future abductions. Therefore, Gumi’s intention to engage in dialogue deserves support as a means to resolve the crisis in Kaduna peacefully.
