Dr. Tajudeen Adebayo, the Chief Imam of Falomo Lagos Central Mosque, has issued a plea for the public to honor the sensitivities of fasting Muslims by refraining from eating in their presence during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday, Dr. Adebayo emphasized the importance of respecting the religious observance of fasting, stating that eating in public during fasting hours undermines the sanctity of the ritual and may discourage individuals from adhering to it.

The Imam’s remarks come in the wake of recent incidents where Muslims were caught consuming food during daylight hours, contrary to the fasting requirements. Notably, Hisbah, the Islamic Police in Kano, apprehended 10 men and a female groundnut vendor for allegedly flouting fasting rules by eating in public. Hisbah spokesperson, Mr. Lawal Fagge, confirmed the arrests, indicating that they were prompted by reports from concerned citizens.

Reflecting on these events, Dr. Adebayo reiterated that fasting during Ramadan is a sacred obligation in Islam and should be treated with reverence by all adherents. He emphasized that fasting is obligatory for mature, healthy Muslims who are not traveling, while certain categories such as the sick, travelers, the elderly, pregnant and breastfeeding women, and those menstruating or experiencing childbirth are exempted.

Dr. Adebayo emphasized the importance of understanding and accommodating those exempted from fasting due to valid reasons. He stressed that it is incumbent upon others to show courtesy and refrain from eating publicly as a sign of respect for fasting individuals.
