A new Artificial Intelligence-powered mobile phone has been introduced by Canada-based Viamo. This innovative device offers a solution for accessing information even in the absence of a smartphone or internet connectivity.

This innovative service operates through traditional handsets connected to local mobile phone networks, allowing users to send commands or requests for information via SMS or voice calls. Unlike conventional AI chatbots, this solution is accessible to illiterate individuals, as it can be prompted by voice commands, making it inclusive for all users.

Moreover, the service is cost-effective, enabling individuals with limited financial resources to access valuable information by spending as little as 10 naira. Olutubosun expressed his delight at the opportunity this service provides, emphasizing its potential to benefit economically disadvantaged individuals.

Viamo’s AI-powered mobile phone is aimed at empowering the world’s poorest and most remote communities, with plans for expansion to countries like Pakistan, India, and Tanzania following its successful launch in Zambia. Supported by development agencies in the United States and the United Kingdom, including a partnership with UNICEF, the service provides crucial information on various topics such as HIV, tropical diseases, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene.

This initiative highlights the transformative power of technology in bridging information gaps and empowering underserved communities, paving the way for greater inclusivity and access to essential knowledge regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status.
