First Lady Remi Tinubu showed resilience in the face of recent death threats from an Islamic cleric, dismissing fear and asserting her seasoned perspective on life at over 60 years old. The incident unfolded during her visit to Bauchi State on Tuesday, following inflammatory remarks made by cleric Idris Tenshi, who labeled her an “infidel” deserving of death.

Tenshi’s sermon, delivered in Hausa, ignited widespread condemnation, prompting him to apologize to the first lady. Despite the apology, Mrs. Tinubu remained undeterred, expressing gratitude for the assurance of safety from Bauchi State Governor and emphasizing her lack of fear in the wake of the threats.

In her statement, she affirmed, “If God has granted me more than 60 years on earth, I shouldn’t be afraid of death.” She stressed the importance of unity in Nigeria and encouraged collective effort to overcome challenges.

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State echoed support for Mrs. Tinubu’s defiant stance, denouncing the cleric’s actions as a “national embarrassment.” He pledged consequences for Tenshi’s behavior and extended apologies to the first lady on behalf of the state, emphasizing her safety as a top priority.
