President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate reopening of Nigeria’s land and air borders with the Republic of Niger, as well as the easing of numerous sanctions imposed on the country, in an important action aimed at boosting regional cooperation and adherence to ECOWAS decisions. This instruction, released by Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), is consistent with resolutions adopted by the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government during its extraordinary summit on February 24, 2024, in Abuja.
During the summit, ECOWAS leaders collectively agreed to lift economic sanctions against several member states, including the Republic of Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. President Tinubu’s directive specifically targets the Republic of Niger, with immediate actions to lift sanctions encompassing various sectors:
- Reopening of Borders: The closure of land and air borders between Nigeria and Niger, as well as the ECOWAS no-fly zone on commercial flights to and from Niger Republic, will be lifted.
- Resumption of Trade: Suspension of all commercial and financial transactions between Nigeria and Niger, along with the freeze of service transactions such as utility services and electricity to Niger Republic, will cease.
- Asset Freeze: Assets of the Republic of Niger held in ECOWAS Central Banks, as well as assets of state enterprises and parastatals in commercial banks, will be unfrozen.
- Financial Assistance: Niger’s suspension from financial assistance and transactions with institutions like EBID and BOAD will be revoked.
- Travel Bans: Travel bans on government officials and their families will be lifted.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has also authorized the lifting of financial and economic sanctions imposed on the Republic of Guinea, signaling a broader commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
The lifting of sanctions against Niger comes amidst a broader effort by ECOWAS leaders to ease tensions and facilitate dialogue among member states. By taking this proactive step, President Tinubu aims to promote stability and prosperity in the region while reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to upholding ECOWAS principles and decisions.
