The House of Representatives has moved closer to decriminalizing attempted suicide by introducing an amendment to the Criminal Code. Sponsored by Francis Waive, the bill seeks to replace the current provision of a one-year prison term for attempted suicide with mandatory counseling for individuals struggling with suicidal thoughts.

During the debate on the bill’s general principles, Waive underscored the importance of showing compassion towards individuals grappling with mental health challenges. He argued that punitive measures exacerbate the suffering of those already in distress, emphasizing the need for a more empathetic approach to addressing mental health issues.

The proposed amendment to Section 327 of the Criminal Code advocates for individuals who attempt suicide to undergo compulsory counseling and community service for a minimum period of six months. This shift in approach prioritizes mental health support and rehabilitation, recognizing the complex and multifaceted nature of mental health struggles.

Following a spirited debate, the bill successfully passed for a second reading after being put to a vote by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.
