The Chairman of Bariga Local Government Area in Lagos State, Kolade David, has attributed the ongoing spike in food prices to individuals he termed ‘price gougers.’ He expressed concern about the impact of the economic downturn on residents, highlighting the frustration and anger caused by the alarming rise in food costs. David urged the government to control pricing and curb profiteering to alleviate the economic burden on Nigerians.
In response to the economic hardship, the Bariga Local Government initiated an intervention program providing health and financial support for residents. Chairman Kolade David disclosed that the council would give N20,000 to 1,000 Bariga indigents as a means of easing their economic difficulties. The selection process prioritized people with disabilities, the elderly, and the poorest in the local government, aiming to address the immediate financial challenges faced by those most vulnerable.
This initiative comes amid broader efforts to mitigate economic challenges in Lagos State, where Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu announced a 25% fare rebate for government-owned transport schemes in February. The call for government intervention and the direct financial support provided by Bariga LG reflect the pressing need to address the socioeconomic impacts of rising food prices and economic difficulties faced by many Nigerians.
