The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, has officially declared Monday, March 11, 2024, as the first day of Ramadan, marking the commencement of the holy month for Muslims around the world. The declaration, based on the sighting of the moon in various parts of Nigeria on Sunday, the 29th day of the Month of Shaban, confirms March 11 as the beginning of Ramadan 1445.
Speaking on behalf of Muslim leaders across the country, Sultan Sa’ad Abubakar affirmed the credibility of the moon sighting reports, stating, “We accept the sighting of the moon accordingly.” He called upon the entire Muslim community in Nigeria to commence their fasting on Monday in accordance with the teachings of Islam.
In addition to observing the fast, Sultan Abubakar urged Muslims to utilize the month of Ramadan as an opportunity to pray fervently for an end to the prevailing insecurity in the country. He emphasized the importance of collective supplication and beseeched all Muslims to implore Allah for peace and stability in Nigeria.
Furthermore, Sultan Abubakar encouraged Muslims to pray for the guidance and wisdom of leaders at all levels of governance, emphasizing the need for them to fulfill their responsibilities with a sense of accountability and righteousness. He stressed the integral role of piety and conscientious leadership in fostering a just and prosperous society.
In his address, Sultan Abubakar extended a heartfelt appeal to the affluent members of the Muslim community to demonstrate generosity and compassion towards the less privileged during the Holy month of Ramadan. He underscored the significance of charity and urged the wealthy to provide assistance to those in need, particularly with food and other essentials, in keeping with the spirit of Ramadan.
