The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a strong condemnation of the abduction of over 200 students from a primary and secondary school in Kuriga village, located in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna state. Expressing profound sadness and shock over the reprehensible incident, NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, called for urgent action from security agencies to ensure the immediate rescue of the innocent children from their abductors.

The distressing incident unfolded on Thursday morning when bandits, riding on motorcycles, stormed the school premises while the students were gathered. Emonefe emphasized the urgent need for security agencies to deploy all necessary resources and expertise to swiftly rescue the abducted students and prevent such alarming occurrences in the future.

Addressing the broader issue of security in educational institutions, Emonefe reiterated NANS’s longstanding call for collaboration between the Federal and State governments to bolster security measures across the country. He emphasized the imperative of fortifying educational facilities to safeguard the lives and well-being of students, teachers, and staff.

Furthermore, Emonefe urged the government to undertake a comprehensive review of security personnel’s manpower and remuneration, stressing that the current levels fall below the standards recommended by the United Nations. Enhancing the capacity and welfare of security personnel is crucial for effectively combating threats and ensuring the safety of communities nationwide.

In light of this distressing incident, NANS calls upon all stakeholders, including government authorities, security agencies, and civil society organizations, to prioritize the protection of educational institutions and the welfare of students. Collective action is essential to address the root causes of insecurity and create an environment where every child can pursue their education without fear or hindrance.
