The House of Representatives has issued a resounding call to the Federal Government, urging the utilization of its prerogative of mercy to grant amnesty to deserving inmates as a crucial step towards alleviating congestion in correctional centers nationwide.
Spearheaded by Chinedu Ogah (APC, Ebonyi), the House adopted a motion pressing the Federal Ministry of Justice to streamline the justice dispensation process, combatting delays and facilitating smoother bail conditions, thus ensuring a fairer and more efficient legal system.
In addition to advocating for amnesty, the House underscores the necessity for comprehensive reforms within Nigeria’s correctional system. This entails modernizing custodial facilities, constructing new centers, and restructuring the bail system to promote swifter adjudication of cases.
Legislative proposals are put forth to expedite the dispensation of justice, reduce the backlog of inmates awaiting trial, and scrutinize the responsibilities of both federal and state governments in inmate rehabilitation efforts.
Recognizing the urgent need for sustainable solutions, the motion emphasizes addressing the overcrowding issue across 244 correctional facilities nationwide. It stresses the implementation of non-custodial measures and the promotion of effective inmate reformation, rehabilitation, and reintegration programs.
Ogah, shedding light on the challenges confronting Nigeria’s correctional system, cites inadequate facilities and prolonged legal proceedings as key contributors to prison overcrowding, particularly fueled by the high number of awaiting trial inmates.
