Nigeria added another medal to its tally at the 13th African Games in Accra, Ghana, as Aruna Quadri battled against Egypt’s Omar Assar in a thrilling final of the men’s table tennis singles event, ultimately settling for silver after a closely contested match.
The showdown between Quadri and Assar captivated spectators, showcasing their exceptional skills and fierce rivalry. Assar claimed the first set with a score of 11-8, but Quadri quickly bounced back, securing victories in the second and third sets with scores of 11-2 and 11-2, respectively.
However, Assar rallied, seizing the fourth set 11-7, only for Quadri to respond by clinching the fifth set 11-9. In a dramatic finale, Assar surged ahead, winning the last two sets 11-9 and 11-0 to secure the gold medal.
Nigeria’s first medal of the Games was earned by Offiong Edem, who claimed the bronze medal in the women’s singles event earlier in the tournament.
