The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) is ramping up efforts to bolster security in the nation’s capital by cracking down on commercial motorcycles, popularly known as ‘Okada,’ through its Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS).
Dr. Abdulateef Bello, Director of DRTS, underscored the agency’s zero-tolerance approach towards the proliferation of commercial motorcycles during an enforcement operation in Kabusa, Abuja.
Represented by Deborah Osho, Head of Operations, Bello highlighted the escalating threat posed by commercial motorcycles, which have transitioned from a mere traffic violation to a significant security concern, prompting decisive government action.
“The menace of commercial motorcycles is reaching alarming levels. Residents live in constant fear, especially after dusk, as Okada riders perpetrate acts of violence, including stabbings and robberies,” remarked Bello.
He emphasized the reckless driving habits of Okada riders, often disregarding traffic regulations and contributing to road accidents. The DRTS, in collaboration with other agencies, is intensifying efforts to rein in their activities, particularly in areas like Kabusa notorious for criminal incidents such as bag snatching.
“We have made several arrests, and some offenders will face punitive measures. One of the apprehended Okada riders was found with a penknife, a tool commonly used in criminal activities. This underscores the urgency of curbing their operations,” added Bello.
Residents engaged in motorcycle businesses were urged to adhere to the ban on Okada within the city center and operate only in designated areas in satellite towns.
Dr. Peter Olumuji, Secretary of Command and Control at FCTA, reiterated that the operation forms part of broader initiatives aimed at combating criminality and enhancing security within the FCT.
He noted recent arrests of kidnapping suspects who employed commercial motorcycles as a means of swift escape, underscoring the necessity of enforcing the ban to safeguard FCT residents.
The crackdown targets areas such as Kubwa, Airport Road, Apo, and Lokogoma, where instances of criminal activities involving Okada riders have been reported, reaffirming the commitment of FCTA to fostering a safer environment for all.
