The recent Nigerian Bar Examination results revealed a mix of outcomes as 888 candidates did not pass the November 2023 exam, while 4,412 candidates achieved success. The Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, Prof. Isa Hayatu Chiroma, highlighted that out of the successful candidates, an impressive 251 attained first-class grades, marking an outstanding and unprecedented accomplishment. The overall success rate of 83.3% reflects the commendable performance of candidates, indicating a promising cohort of legal professionals emerging despite the challenges.
Amidst the celebration of achievements, the Chairman of the Body of Benchers, Justice Mary Peter-Odili, expressed concerns about the current state of the judiciary. She noted the decline in public confidence due to conflicting judgments and lawyer indiscipline. To address these issues, the Body of Benchers established a committee, consisting of prominent members of the legal profession, tasked with finding effective solutions to the problem of conflicting judgments. As the new lawyers embark on their legal careers, they are urged to uphold ethical standards and contribute to restoring public trust in the legal system.
