The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dauda Ali Biu, issued a stern warning on Monday, urging motorists to refrain from night travel, overloading their vehicles, and exceeding lawful speed limits. This caution came in the wake of two separate road accidents that claimed the lives of 17 individuals in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Kaduna State on the same day.
The FCT incident unfolded around the Fire Service Academy along the Yangoji-Gwagwalada expressway, while the second mishap occurred at Tashar Yari Village along the Zaria-Kano Expressway in Kaduna State during the early hours of Monday. According to the report from the Corps Crash Investigation Team, the Tashan Yari Village crash transpired at 07:36 am, involving a trailer overloaded with grains and carrying 40 passengers on top of the goods.
The trailer, bearing registration number KTG 454 ZZ, was on a night journey from Azare in Bauchi State to Kano when the accident transpired. The incident resulted from wrongful overtaking, exceeding the speed limit, and overloading the vehicle with goods and passengers. Out of the 40 passengers, 12 lost their lives, while the remaining 28 sustained varying degrees of injuries.
Similarly, at 04:35 am, a Peugeot J5 bus with registration XF 530GRK collided with a stationary trailer that had broken down along the Abuja-Lokoja Expressway between Yangoji and Gwagwalada. Subsequently, five individuals were burnt beyond recognition as the vehicle erupted in flames due to the impact of the crash. The crash report attributed the causes of both accidents to speed violations leading to a loss of control.
