Nigeria’s sprawling metropolis, Lagos, has reached another milestone in its quest for enhanced urban transportation as the second line of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit system commenced operations today. The inauguration of this new line, occurring a mere five months after the debut of the first line, underscores the city’s commitment to revolutionizing its transportation infrastructure.

The opening ceremony for the 26.3km section, featuring eight stations, was graced by the presence of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, highlighting the significance of this development on a national scale. Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, lauded the occasion as a “monumental leap” for the city, emphasizing the collaborative effort driving urban transformation across Africa.

Construction of the rail network, initiated in 2009, has been undertaken in partnership with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the same entity responsible for the successful implementation of the Blue Line, which commenced operations in September. Additionally, reports suggest that further rolling stock may be procured from Chinese suppliers, including CRCC Dalian, although the status of a previously placed order remains uncertain.

As Lagos continues to assert itself as a beacon of progress and development in Africa, the expansion of its rail mass transit system stands as a testament to the city’s unwavering commitment to enhancing connectivity and mobility for its residents.
