The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado-Bayero, has issued a heartfelt appeal to traders, urging them to alleviate the financial burden on the masses by reducing the cost of foodstuffs and other goods ahead of the upcoming Ramadan season. The royal plea was delivered during the launch of the book “Dauloli a Kasar Hausa” (Kingdoms in Hausaland) by Prof. Sa’idu-Mohammed Gusau in Zaria on Sunday.
Emphasizing the significance of easing financial strains during Ramadan, a sacred month for Muslims marked by fasting and spiritual reflection, Emir Ado-Bayero urged wealthy individuals in Nigeria to extend their generosity by assisting the less privileged members of society during this period.
In his prayers, the Emir invoked divine protection for the people, hoping that they would witness the sacred month in good health and that their prayers and sacrifices would be accepted. The Emir also commended the author of the book for shedding light on the administrative systems, trades, norms, and values of Hausa kingdoms, including Kano, Katsina, Zamfara, Kebbi, and Zazzau.
The book, titled “Dauloli a Kasar Hausa,” spans 356 pages and encompasses seven chapters, providing a comprehensive narrative and historical account of the Hausa kingdoms. Prof. Ahmed Zaria of Kaduna State University, the book’s reviewer, lauded its contribution to linguistics and history, recommending it as essential for students and researchers.
During the book launch, Prof. Zaria emphasized the importance of continuous research activities among academics, urging them not to neglect research even after achieving professorial status. He expressed concern that some scholars abandon research upon reaching the pinnacle of their academic careers.
The book’s publisher, Prof. Gusau, explained that the project aimed to consolidate the written history of the Hausa Kingdoms, broadening the scope beyond a few kingdoms typically covered in university research. Additionally, he highlighted the book’s role in fostering harmony and unity among the Hausa kingdoms and other communities across Nigeria.
The Emir’s appeal for affordability and support during Ramadan reflects the traditional leader’s concern for the welfare of the people, emphasizing the communal spirit that characterizes this sacred period. As the call resonates, it serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of economic and social aspects during religious observances in the diverse tapestry of Nigerian society.
