The federal government has squarely pointed fingers at certain electricity distribution companies (DisCos), accusing them of exacerbating the current power crisis by deliberately refusing to accept power supply from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, issued this condemnation, warning that non-performing DisCos face queries and potential license revocation over their role in the worsening situation.
Adelabu disclosed plans to hold the management of underperforming DisCos accountable for their actions or inaction, emphasizing the severity of the power crisis. Specifically, he summoned the chief executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) and Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) to a meeting next week to address the deteriorating power supply in their respective regions. Additionally, the managing director of TCN, Sule Ahmed Abdulazeez, was also summoned to the meeting.
Expressing deep concern over the worsening power supply situation, Adelabu emphasized the federal government’s intention to scrutinize non-performing power distribution companies. This comes in response to nationwide reports of abysmal power supply since the beginning of the year, with several areas in Abuja experiencing blackouts.
Confirming the dire state of affairs, TCN reported the vandalization of its transmission towers by vandals, further exacerbating the challenges faced by the electricity sector. In response to these developments, the federal government is poised to take decisive action to address the root causes of the power crisis and hold accountable those responsible for the continued deterioration of the nation’s electricity supply.
