The Government of Ukraine has donated 25,000 tonnes of wheat as emergency food assistance to 1.3 million vulnerable people in northeast Nigeria.

This donation facilitated through the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), aims to address rising inflation and food price spikes in the country. The initiative, known as the “Grain from Ukraine” initiative, was launched by Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky.

The wheat shipment was made possible through collaborative efforts from several countries, including the UK, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Republic of Korea, and Sweden.

Cynthia Rowe, British High Commission Development Director, emphasized the impact of conflicts and violence in northeast Nigeria on agriculture and livelihoods, leading to food insecurity.

The rise in staple food prices in Nigeria has made basic meals unaffordable for many vulnerable families, with prices of key staples increasing significantly compared to previous years.
