At least 20 students have died in suspected meningitis outbreaks across three boarding girls’ secondary schools and the Federal Government Girls’ College in Potiskum and Fika local government areas of Yobe State.
The Yobe State Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mohammed Sani-Idris, confirmed the deaths, stating that efforts are underway to combat the spread.
Officials, including the Commissioner, have relocated temporarily to Potiskum and implemented proactive measures, such as assigning teachers to monitor students’ health around the clock and establishing isolation centers in schools.
Governor Mai Mala Buni directed the Ministry of Health to investigate the outbreak and provide medical assistance.
Dr. Idriss emphasized the importance of student well-being and the need for effective remedies for those affected.
