The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) has reported a boat mishap in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on Monday night, resulting in three casualties while eleven others involved in the accident were rescued.
According to Mrs. Wuraola Alake, the Head of the Public Affairs Unit at LASWA, the distress call was received at about 7:17 p.m. on February 26, indicating that a 17-seater boat named Oluwaseyifunmi, loaded with 14 passengers, was involved in the accident along the Ibeshe/Ikorodu channel en route Ebute Ipakodo Ikorodu from Addax jetty, Lagos.
Investigations revealed that the capsized boat and another passenger boat, which has yet to be identified, were engaged in a speeding contest, causing strong waves that led to the capsizing of one of the boats, while the other managed to reach Ibeshe jetty to call for help.
