A structure under construction close to the bustling Ochanja Market in the heart of Onitsha, Anambra State, collapsed, trapping an undetermined number of individuals.

The incident occurred around 8 pm on Monday, shaking the vicinity as the unfinished building, intended to complement the market, gave way with some laborers still inside. Panic engulfed the area as bystanders and locals rushed to aid those trapped beneath the rubble.

Eyewitnesses and residents disclosed on Tuesday that one fatality had been confirmed, while two others, rescued amidst the chaos, sustained injuries of varying severity. Rescue operations persist as responders strive to retrieve any remaining survivors.

Efforts to glean official statements from the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, and a representative from the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (ANSEMA) proved futile, with calls unanswered and messages unacknowledged at the time of this report’s filing.
