Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s unwavering commitment to transforming Abuja into a smart city, emphasizing that this goal is non-negotiable.
Speaking at the annual media retreat of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps in Keffi, Nasarawa State, Wike, represented by Anthony Ogunleye, the Director of Press in his office, highlighted the administration’s dedication to creating an environment that benefits all through diverse efforts.
Wike stressed that the vision of a smart city goes beyond mere ambition, noting it as a crucial step towards ensuring sustainable urban development and enhancing the quality of life for residents. He emphasized the integration of technology, innovation, and strategic planning to foster efficiency, resilience, and responsiveness to residents’ needs.
The minister outlined various initiatives aimed at realizing this vision, including the promotion of accessible green spaces, efficient waste management, sustainable transport systems, and the encouragement of a healthy lifestyle.
He urged residents to fulfill their civic duties, such as timely payment of taxes and utility bills, while the FCTA strives to meet its obligations. Wike also condemned flagrant violations of basic rules, stressing that such actions would no longer be tolerated.
Wike called for collaborative efforts between the government and the public to build a city where both parties uphold their responsibilities for the city’s betterment. He urged the media to help disseminate this message across the populace.
Additionally, Shehu Ahmad, the Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority, disclosed plans to review the Abuja Master Plan to integrate current realities in the ongoing development of the city.
