Reacting to the tragic stampede incident in Lagos, where seven individuals lost their lives while attempting to purchase seized rice, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, expressed profound sadness at the prevailing economic hardship across the nation.

Speaking at the first anniversary of the 2023 presidential election in Abuja, Obi lamented the disproportionate allocation of funds by the current government. He highlighted the tragic irony of Nigerians losing their lives in a desperate quest to buy food cheaper, amidst the growing hunger and starvation in the country.

In his critique of excessive expenditure on wasteful items, Obi emphasized the need for prudent financial management, especially in times of adversity, where resources should be directed towards alleviating the suffering of the people.
