In a remarkable display of anti-corruption efforts, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, the newly appointed Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revealed substantial progress within his first 100 days in office. Since assuming the role on October 12, 2023, appointed by President Bola Tinubu, Olukoyede shared that the EFCC received an impressive 5,000 fraud petitions during this period.

Highlighting the magnitude of the task at hand, Olukoyede emphasized the agency’s commitment to investigating these petitions. Despite having a staff strength of less than 4,800, the EFCC approved the investigation of 3,000 cases, showcasing its dedication to addressing the pervasive issue of corruption in Nigeria.

Speaking at the 20th-anniversary lecture of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda Resources Centre in Lagos, Olukoyede stressed the collective responsibility required in the fight against corruption. He pointed out the challenges faced by the EFCC, including limited resources, while acknowledging the need for collaborative efforts.

During his address, Olukoyede disclosed that the EFCC successfully secured convictions in 700 cases within the short timeframe, recovering a substantial amount of over N60bn and $10m. This achievement underscored the agency’s effectiveness in tackling financial crimes and holding perpetrators accountable.

However, the chairman noted the stark reality that, despite the significant recoveries, the scale of corruption remained staggering. He emphasized the need for a united front, urging citizens to actively participate in reporting suspicious activities and supporting the ongoing efforts to curb corruption in Nigeria.

In tandem with Olukoyede’s sentiments, Mr. Olanrewaju Suraju, Chairman of the Human and Environmental Development Agenda Resources Centre, acknowledged the challenges in the anti-corruption fight and called upon all Nigerians to join forces in combatting this pervasive issue. The call for collective responsibility echoed throughout the discourse, emphasizing the crucial role each individual plays in fostering a transparent and accountable society.
