The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has unveiled plans to register between 20 to 25 million National Identity Numbers (NINs) by the close of 2024. This ambitious target aligns with the World Bank’s Digital Identification for Development (ID4D) project, forecasting enrollment figures to soar to 148 million by June 2024.
The revelation came to light during the NIMC’s recent Management Retreat in Lagos, where Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Director-General and CEO of NIMC, emphasized the pivotal role of the commission’s Front End Partners (FEPs) in streamlining the registration process nationwide. A total of 96 FEPs have been revalidated and granted licenses to facilitate enrollment, signifying a concerted effort to enhance efficiency and accessibility.
Coker-Odusote underscored NIMC’s unwavering commitment to furnishing every Nigerian and legal resident with a unique and secure NIN, a prerequisite for accessing vital services and economic opportunities. He stressed the imperative of maintaining the integrity of the enrollment process, urging FEPs to ensure inclusivity and compliance with data protection regulations.
The Director-General urged collaborative efforts with educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and community leaders to ensure that no segment of society is overlooked in the registration drive. He emphasized the importance of professionalism and effective communication in upholding applicants’ trust and safeguarding their personal information.
Furthermore, NIMC’s revalidation initiative aims to fortify the enrollment system’s efficiency and rectify identified shortcomings. Payment of outstanding arrears owed to FEPs has commenced, signaling NIMC’s dedication to enhancing performance and fulfilling financial obligations.
Industry feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with FEPs commending NIMC for its proactive approach and commitment to improving enrollment processes. Jibyes Consulting, one of NIMC’s partners, lauded the commission for initiating payments and emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration to optimize enrollment performance and system integrity.
As NIMC forges ahead with its ambitious registration targets, the nation stands poised to realize the benefits of comprehensive national identification, fostering social inclusion, economic development, and efficient service delivery.
