The deputy governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu, revealed during a Channels TV interview on Friday, February 23, that the discord between him and Governor Godwin Obaseki stems primarily from his decision to run for the upcoming Edo State gubernatorial election. Shaibu asserted his right to contest in an election and emphasized that the governor has been unhappy with his choice not to support Obaseki’s preferred candidate.

According to Shaibu, the governor’s dissatisfaction has led to negative actions, creating a less-than-amicable working environment. Despite the strained relationship, Shaibu expressed his commitment to respecting the office of the governor, whether as deputy or in any other capacity.

Acknowledging the toxicity in their relationship, Shaibu mentioned his attempts to bridge the gap, but Obaseki has been unresponsive. He cited instances where the governor would not answer his calls or respond to greetings at public functions. Despite the challenges, Shaibu emphasized that their only fundamental difference lies in his decision to contest the election.
