The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has announced plans to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to manage traffic around road intersections. Mr. Kalu Emetu, the Head of Public Relations and Enlightenment at DRTS, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Emetu explained that the decision to deploy AI stems from the increasing traffic congestion in the city center, necessitating the need for innovative solutions to complement the efforts of traffic personnel. AI, which simulates human thinking processes, is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth flow of traffic and enforcing compliance with traffic rules and regulations.
Although the AI technology has not yet been put into use due to ongoing arrangements with partners, Emetu expressed confidence that once operational, it would significantly improve traffic management in the FCT. He emphasized that the deployment of AI aligns with the DRTS’s commitment to ensuring a clean and orderly traffic environment.
Furthermore, Emetu highlighted that traffic offenders would be held accountable for violations, including those observed during the testing phase of the AI system. Offenders will be notified of their infractions and required to pay fines through electronic means, leveraging the recently launched e-booking and e-ticketing system.
The spokesperson underscored the efficiency and reliability of the AI technology in monitoring traffic activities, thereby reducing the need for extensive human presence at intersections. He emphasized that the implementation of AI would enhance motorists’ confidence in traffic management processes while facilitating seamless enforcement of traffic regulations.
In conclusion, Emetu expressed optimism about the imminent deployment of AI technology, which is expected to revolutionize traffic management in the FCT by leveraging advanced digital solutions to address congestion and ensure safer roads for all commuters.
