In a bid to alleviate the challenges faced by Nigerian and foreign travellers entering or departing the country, the federal government has implemented 30-second biometric clearance gates at all international airports nationwide, announced Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior.
The introduction of these facilities aims to streamline the processing of international passengers, ensuring swift and efficient clearance procedures, as highlighted by the minister during his visit to inspect the newly installed biometric equipment at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja and the Command and Control Centre at the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) headquarters.
Dr Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the biometric gates have the capability to screen and clear passengers within a mere 30 seconds, eliminating the need for direct interaction with immigration personnel.
He further revealed plans to roll out these facilities in major airports across the country, including Lagos, Port-Harcourt, Kano, Abuja, and Enugu by March. Lagos is set to have 17 gates, while Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Kano will each have 10, and Enugu will have four.
Moreover, the minister highlighted the integration of the Advanced Passenger Information System (APIS) and the Command and Control Centre, underscoring their role in enhancing national security by enabling real-time monitoring of individuals entering the country.
Expressing his satisfaction with the progress made, Dr Tunji-Ojo emphasized the importance of efficient border control management systems in shaping the nation’s security outlook and ensuring seamless travel experiences for passengers. He lauded the efforts of the Nigeria Immigration Service in aligning with global standards and delivering quality services in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“The efficiency of the services provided by the NIS determines whatever we see in our security outlook as a nation. All these are being done in line with global best practices and standards and in consonance with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu to provide quality services to Nigerians,” stated the minister.
