The Department of State Services (DSS) has taken note of the plans by certain sections of the organized labour to stage protests between 27th and 28th February 2024, addressing various economic concerns across the country. While acknowledging the legitimate right of the labour movement to engage in such actions, the DSS is urging them to reconsider this plan in the interest of peace and public order.
The DSS is emphasizing the importance of pursuing dialogue and negotiation rather than resorting to actions that could escalate tensions. There is a concern that some individuals are intending to exploit the protests to instigate crisis and widespread violence, exacerbating the socio-economic situation in the country.
The DSS encourages citizens to recognize that the government, at all levels, is actively working to address the current economic challenges. Authorities are engaged with various stakeholders to develop strategies to overcome these difficulties, and citizens are urged to allow them the opportunity to handle these challenges effectively.
Citizens are reminded of the timeless message conveyed by the esteemed poet JP Clark in “The Casualties,” emphasizing the dangers of escalated conflicts and the potential for everyone to become casualties in times of trouble. The ongoing global conflicts serve as a stark reminder of the catastrophic repercussions on countries’ domestic environments, highlighting the need to protect and maintain internal stability and unity.
Parents and guardians are urged to guide their children and wards away from actions that could jeopardize public safety and harmony. Additionally, all sectors, including political parties, opposition groups, religious and traditional institutions, civil society, and non-governmental bodies, are called upon to reject violence and demonstrate leadership during these challenging times.
The DSS emphasizes its opposition to violence as a means of addressing present-day challenges, whether economic, political, or otherwise. The Service commits to working with sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace is maintained in the country.
