In a firm stance against the occupation of public spaces for residential purposes, the Lagos State Government, under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has reiterated that hardship cannot serve as a justification for squatting, particularly under bridges. Chief Press Secretary Gboyega Akosile, responding to inquiries regarding alternatives for those facing poverty, underscores the state’s master plan and emphasizes that public areas must not be transformed into living quarters.

The recent cleanup initiative beneath the Obalende Bridge, prompted by a four-day ultimatum to squatters, represents a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to combat lawlessness and hooliganism in public spaces. Akosile reiterates the administration’s unwavering dedication to tackling housing challenges, citing a housing scheme tailored for low-income earners as one of the proactive measures being pursued.

During an inspection tour alongside his deputy and other officials, Governor Sanwo-Olu issues a stern warning against residential or commercial activities under bridges. He envisions a transformation of these spaces into recreational hubs and assures that the government will provide alternative support for those affected.
