The Federal Government has initiated the disbursement of previously withheld salaries for members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), as reported by sources within the academic sector.
Prof. Gbolahan Bolarin from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, verified the salary payments, clarifying that it represents a partial release of salaries that were withheld during the eight-month strike in 2022.
President Tinubu gave approval for the release of salaries spanning four months in October 2023.
In a significant development, the Minister of Education announced a 35% salary increase for university workers and granted universities autonomy, enabling them to conduct recruitments without requiring waivers.
These measures were implemented following consultations with unions representing tertiary institutions.
