Controversy continues to swirl around the Edo state Governorship Primary Election held on February 17, 2024, as three aspirants have asserted themselves as the rightful winners. Despite the confusion and division within the party ranks, the leadership remains notably silent on the matter, leaving many to speculate on the reasons for their reticence.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, serving as the Chairman of the Edo State Governorship Election Primary Committee, initially declared Hon. Dennis Idahosa as the winner of the primary. However, the State returning officer in the Edo Central Senatorial District declared Senator Monday Okpebholo as the victor, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

Adding to the chaos, Dekeri Amanero, allegedly in collaboration with certain individuals within the party, has also proclaimed himself as the rightful winner. This development has further exacerbated the internal rifts and divisions within the party, raising questions about the credibility and integrity of the primary process.

In response to inquiries, the State Acting chairman of the party in Edo, Jareth Tenebe, offered a vague assurance that the rightful candidate would be announced in due course. He emphasized the party’s adherence to established procedures and hinted at an impending resolution to the ongoing dispute.

Tenebe stated, “The party conducted primary and somebody emerged. So, within the next few days, you people will know who won the primary.” Addressing concerns about his own involvement in declaring a winner, he reiterated his role as the party chairman and deferred to the National Working Committee (NWC) for the official announcement.

He concluded by affirming, “At the appropriate time, you will see the party’s candidate, and that is the only thing I can say for now.”

As the impasse persists and tensions escalate, the spotlight remains firmly on the party leadership to provide clarity and transparency in resolving the dispute.
