Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, has cautioned Nigerians against making “unwarranted” and “unguarded statements” criticizing President Bola Tinubu’s government regarding insecurity and rising food prices, warning that such actions will have consequences.

In a statement released by the Ministry of Defence spokesperson, Henshaw Ogubike, Matawalle emphasized the need for responsible discourse and urged against using inflammatory language that could exacerbate tensions and potentially lead to violence.

Matawalle praised Tinubu’s efforts in addressing economic challenges faced by Nigerians, stating that the President and his team are diligently working to alleviate burdens on the populace. He advised against further divisive remarks, emphasizing that there would be repercussions for those who engage in such behavior.

The Defence Minister’s statement comes amidst widespread discontent over economic hardship and soaring food prices, highlighted by recent protests in Niger, Kano, and Osun states, as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress’ declaration of a two-day nationwide protest.

Concerns over the country’s inflation rate, which rose to 29.90% in January 2024 according to the National Bureau of Statistics, further underscore the gravity of the situation. Additionally, public figures such as Fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde “KWAM1” and Nollywood actor Olaiya Igwe have voiced alarm over the escalating cost of commodities.

Moreover, the Northern Traditional Council, led by Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has warned of the potential for social unrest due to rising poverty, hunger, and insecurity, suggesting mounting dissatisfaction with Tinubu’s administration.

As Nigerians grapple with the ramifications of economic hardship, Matawalle’s admonition serves as a reminder of the importance of constructive dialogue and collective efforts towards addressing pressing socio-economic challenges facing the nation.
