The federal government has underscored the importance of implementing a single identification management system to combat insecurity, corruption, and other societal challenges in Nigeria. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister of Communications Innovation and Digital Economy, emphasized that unifying the National Identification Number (NIN), the Bank Verification Number (BVN), and other digital identity platforms is imperative for the country’s development.

Speaking in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Tijani highlighted that a unified digital identity system would facilitate effective planning and equitable distribution of resources, ultimately aiding in the fight against various forms of criminal activities.

During an event themed “Transforming Public Service in Nigeria: The Role of the Technology Workforce,” Tijani addressed Directors of Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs), stressing the significance of a unified digital system in enhancing the efficiency of government services.

Tijani also emphasized the need for data sharing among government agencies, particularly security agencies, to bolster national security efforts and improve service delivery to citizens.

Furthermore, he expressed optimism about achieving the implementation of Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) within the next year, underscoring the government’s commitment to leveraging technology for national development.

The minister highlighted the potential benefits of a unified digital identity system, including facilitating seamless digital banking and enabling more targeted interventions in various sectors such as education, health, and transportation.

Tijani concluded by urging alignment and integration of technological solutions across government agencies to harness the power of data sharing and enhance governance effectiveness.

The government’s push for a single identification management system reflects its commitment to leveraging technology to address societal challenges and drive sustainable development in Nigeria.
