NiMET Warns of Persistent Heat Stress in Coming Days

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) has issued a warning stating that the excessive heat currently being experienced in the country will persist for some time.

In a brief statement on its official X page, NiMET highlighted the implications of the ongoing weather conditions and provided advice to the public on how to cope with the situation.

“Air temperatures have reached 41°C in the North and 39°C in the South, with model projections indicating that temperatures will remain high in the coming days,” NiMET stated.

Implications:

  1. Dehydration: Leading to fainting and other health issues.
  2. Heat-Related Illnesses: Including chickenpox, measles, heat rash, weakness, fever, and dry lips.
  3. Respiratory Issues: Due to the hot and dry air.
  4. Increased Vulnerability to Chronic Conditions: Such as cardiovascular diseases.

Advisories:

  1. Adequate Fluid Intake: Ensure proper hydration by drinking plenty of water.
  2. Seek Shade: Avoid direct exposure to sunlight and stay in shaded areas when possible.
  3. Use Fans: Utilize fans or other cooling devices to stay comfortable.
  4. Wear Light, Breathable Clothing: Choose lightweight and loose-fitting clothes to reduce heat absorption.
  5. Avoid Strenuous Physical Activity: Refrain from engaging in vigorous exercise or outdoor activities during peak heat hours, typically between 12:00 noon and 4:00 pm.

NiMET’s advisory aims to raise awareness about the potential health risks associated with prolonged exposure to high temperatures and provides practical tips to minimize the impact of heat stress on individuals.
