Driver Lands in Court Over Alleged Reckless Driving Resulting in Manslaughter

Danladi Umar, a 45-year-old driver, has appeared before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court on charges of reckless driving and manslaughter following an incident on the Lagos Badagry expressway.

According to ASP Clément Okuiomose, the prosecutor, the defendant allegedly committed the offence on Feb.4, around 7:45pm at Magbon Bus Stop. It is alleged that Umar drove a Boxer Bus with registration number SMK 391 YA in a dangerous and reckless manner on the highway, resulting in the death of Oyelowo Ashade.

The prosecutor cited that the defendant’s actions are in violation of sections 18 and 27 of RTA CAP 124, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria.

During the court proceedings, Umar pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Chief Magistrate Mr N A Layeni granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. One of the sureties is required to be a community leader, while the other must be a religious leader in his community.

The case has been adjourned until March 14 for further hearing.
