A fresh bout of turmoil has gripped the Labour Party, with its National Treasurer, Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, urging the National Chairman, Julius Abure, to furnish a comprehensive report on the party’s finances, notably the N3.5bn proceeds from form sales and other fundraising endeavors for the 2023 elections. Oparah stressed the imperative of transparency, accountability, and justice in the party’s financial affairs during a press conference in Abuja on Monday.

Oparah accused Abure of impeding her from executing her constitutional obligations of overseeing the party’s finances, alleging his consistent refusal to subject financial records to scrutiny, particularly post the closure of form sales preceding the 2023 polls.

Expressing her distress, Oparah lamented a breakdown in internal mechanisms meant to hold leaders accountable for financial misconduct within the party. She conveyed, “Good morning, ladies and gentlemen of the press. I stand before you today with a heavy heart and a sense of duty to the principles of transparency, accountability, and justice. With great reluctance and deep concern, I am compelled to publicly address the media regarding the egregious financial mismanagement and corruption that have plagued our beloved party under the leadership of Mr. Julius Abure, the current National Chairman.”

Continuing her address, Oparah added, “As National Treasurer, I am constrained to come before you and the public today because the internal mechanisms of our party have failed woefully to bring Mr. Abure to account for his brazen abuse of office and misappropriation of party funds. His appetite for power has grown unchecked, and he has deliberately undermined my duties and authority as stipulated in the party’s constitution.”
