During the penalty shootout stage of the match between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday evening, a tragic incident occurred as a member of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) collapsed and passed away.

The deceased, identified as Samuel from Kaduna State, was serving in Adamawa and reportedly died just before the decisive kick that secured Nigeria’s advancement to the final of the African Cup of Nations. The unfortunate incident took place at a sports viewing center in Numan, where people were gathered to celebrate Nigeria’s victory over South Africa.

A witness shared the heartbreaking news on social media, stating that the corps member fainted just before the winning goal’s kick and passed away before reaching the hospital. The witness expressed condolences, saying, “May his soul rest in peace.”

NYSC Coordinator in Adamawa State, Mr. Jingi Dennis, confirmed the incident in a telephone conversation on Thursday morning. While awaiting more details, the coordinator acknowledged receiving the news of the corps member’s death the previous night.

According to colleagues who accompanied him to watch the match, the late corps member had expressed his dislike for watching penalty shootouts. Moments later, he bowed his head and suddenly collapsed. Despite efforts, he was confirmed dead at the General Hospital in Numan by the attending doctor.
