A motion has been tabled in the House of Representatives by Aliyu Madaki, a member of the New Nigeria People’s Party from Kano State, urging for the immortalization of the late former Speaker of the House, Ghali Na’Abba. The motion titled, “Need to immortalise former Speaker, Late Ghali Na’Abba by naming the National Assembly Service Commission building after him,” aims to commemorate Na’Abba’s significant contributions.

Na’Abba’s political journey began during his time as a student at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he actively participated in the People’s Redemption Party founded by Mallam Aminu Kano during the Second Republic. Upon the advent of the Fourth Republic in 1999, Na’Abba was elected as a member of the House of Representatives, marking the start of his impactful legislative career.

During his tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1999 to 2003, Na’Abba distinguished himself through his bold and dynamic leadership style. He championed legislative independence and initiated reforms aimed at strengthening the institution. Notable among his achievements were his rigorous scrutiny of the budget framework, enhancement of House Committees, promotion of inclusivity and participatory governance, and his commitment to regulating debates on critical national issues.

In light of Na’Abba’s remarkable legacy, Madaki proposed the naming of the National Assembly Service Commission Building after him as a fitting tribute. The motion received unanimous support from the House, which recognized Na’Abba’s invaluable contributions to the nation’s democracy.

The initiative to immortalize Na’Abba underscores the House of Representatives’ commitment to preserving the memory of exceptional leaders who have left indelible marks on Nigeria’s political landscape. The resolution to honor Na’Abba by naming a significant governmental structure after him reflects the profound respect and admiration he commands even in death.

The motion has been referred to the Senate for concurrence, indicating the bicameral legislature’s collective endorsement of the proposal. If approved, the National Assembly Service Commission Building will stand as a lasting monument to the legacy of Ghali Na’Abba, ensuring that his contributions to the nation’s development are remembered and celebrated for generations to come.
