The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Police Affairs, Dr. Nasir Sani-Gwarzo, has announced the establishment of the Central Motor Registry to address the challenge of stolen vehicles and enhance citizen safety.
Speaking at a stakeholders conference on Improving Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), Sani-Gwarzo emphasized the importance of the Central Motor Registry in protecting Nigerians from criminals and the risks associated with stolen vehicles.
He explained that the registry, integrated with the Nigeria Police Force and the Interpol system, provides a lifetime guarantee for vehicle owners by revealing the history and antecedents of imported used cars. In case of any incidents abroad where the vehicle was registered, the Nigerian police will provide protection to the owner.
Sani-Gwarzo highlighted the automation of police specialized services, including character certificate issuance and motor vehicle registration, to streamline service delivery and make it more accessible to citizens across the country.
Emphasizing that the initiative aims to enhance service quality rather than generate profit, he stressed its similarity to systems practiced in America and Europe.
The conference, organized to bolster contributions to internally generated revenue and address challenges, underscored the need for effective revenue generation to mitigate annual budget deficits.
In line with President Bola Tinubu’s directive to improve revenue generation across ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs), participants were urged to maximize their efforts to boost revenue for the federation.
