NANS Calls on FG to Prevent Fee Hikes and Unfair Policies in Tertiary Institutions

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the federal government to intervene swiftly to prevent fee increases and unfair policies in tertiary institutions across the country.

This plea comes in response to the decision by the management of Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, to withhold examinations from students who have not fully paid their school fees.

NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, expressed concern over this development, emphasizing that it is particularly troubling given the current economic challenges facing many Nigerians. Emonefe called on the University Management to reconsider its decision and seek alternative solutions that do not discriminate against students based on their financial circumstances.

The student body highlighted the impact of such policies, noting that many students and their families are grappling with financial difficulties and may struggle to afford the full payment at once. Denying students the opportunity to take their exams jeopardizes their academic future and undermines the principle of equal access to education.

NANS emphasized the importance of education in national development and stressed that every student should have an equal opportunity to excel academically, regardless of their financial situation. Imposing unfair conditions during exams not only undermines fairness but also obstructs the goal of providing quality education.

The statement called on the Minister of Education to intervene and ensure that all tertiary institutions in the country adhere to fair and inclusive policies regarding school fees and examinations. NANS reiterated the fundamental right to education and urged authorities to prioritize the well-being and academic success of students.
