The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 11 suspects in connection with the recent cult clashes that resulted in four deaths in various parts of Abeokuta, the state capital. Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, disclosed this information on Monday, shedding light on the violent incidents that occurred on Sunday.
One of the casualties identified as Seun Elewode, a member of the Aye cult group, was fatally shot during a clash with rival cult groups in the Adeun area of Lafenwa, Abeokuta. Another suspected cultist from the Buccaneer Confraternity was killed in the Akinolugbade area. The incidents unfolded during a shootout at their hideouts, including a cool spot during a birthday party.
Odutola stated, “On February 4, around 10.45 p.m., in Oshungboye Crescent in Akinolugbade, a suspected cultist was shot dead, while another was shot in the chest.” The police spokesperson added that a total of 11 suspects have been apprehended in connection with these killings.
The arrested individuals include Oluga Abiola, Olamilekan Abiodun, Olarenwaju Michael, Jimoh Okewole, Wasu Tolulope, Abiodun Adeyemi, Muiz Adeyemi, Adebowale Saheed, Adebowale Ayoola, David Oviem, and Adebowale Olayori.
This spate of violence in Abeokuta began with the killing of a suspected Eiye confraternity leader, identified as Dare, on Thursday. Subsequently, clashes unfolded, leading to a total of four deaths and several others sustaining gunshot injuries.
These incidents underscore the urgent need for security measures to curb cult-related violence, as communities grapple with the impact of these clashes. The police’s prompt response and arrests mark steps toward restoring order, but addressing the root causes remains imperative for sustained peace in the affected areas.
