The recent wave of Boko Haram attacks in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State has left a profound impact, marked by the tragic loss of lives and extensive property destruction. The midnight assault on Saturday unfolded with echoing gunshots resonating through the village, situated approximately 17km away from Damaturu, the state capital.
During the harrowing onslaught, a mobile policeman and two civilians fell victim to the violence. The district head’s palace in Kukareta, strategically located on the Damaturu-Maiduguri Road, was not spared as it succumbed to flames set ablaze by the assailants, amplifying the scale of devastation.
Eyewitness accounts underscore the brutality of the attackers, believed to be Boko Haram insurgents, as they descended upon homes, engaging in looting of food items and setting houses ablaze. One witness poignantly recounted the loss of three lives, including a mobile police officer who succumbed to a gunshot wound during the relentless attack.
In an official press statement, Major General Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), the state security adviser, confirmed the involvement of suspected Boko Haram terrorists in the assault. The district head of Kukareta’s palace fell victim to the flames, and two patrol vehicles belonging to security personnel were reduced to ashes in the wake of the violence. The incident further targeted an election collation center at Kukareta, resulting in the tragic loss of one police officer and two civilians.
In the aftermath of these heinous acts, Abdulsalam called upon the resilient spirit of the local community, urging them to continue supporting the security agencies in their tireless efforts to restore and maintain peace and security in the area. This grim episode serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced in safeguarding communities against the persistent threat of insurgency.
