Residents of Abeokuta are gripped with fear as cult superiority battles appear to have reemerged in Ogun State, with a suspected leader of the Eiye confraternity, known as Oloba or Dare, being shot dead by a rival cult group.
Oloba met his untimely end in the Ijeja area of Abeokuta South Local Government Area, right in front of his house. The resurgence of cult-related violence is reminiscent of the challenges that plagued the state in 2023, with cultism being a significant menace, especially in areas like Sagamu and Abeokuta.
The assailants carried out a well-planned operation, executing Oloba around 11:00 pm on Thursday, raising concerns among residents about the return of cult-related activities. In a separate incident, another suspected cultist, Tayo Alora, was also murdered in the Isabo area of the state capital on a Sunday morning.
A resident, speaking anonymously, expressed concern, suggesting that the government and security agencies need to take swift action to prevent a recurrence of the violence that plagued the state in the past. Eyewitnesses, who fled when the assailants opened fire, noted that Oloba’s killers conducted the operation with precision.
The Ogun State Police Command, through its spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incidents and assured the public that a discrete investigation is underway. Odutola pledged to provide more information but has yet to do so.
