South Africa’s head coach, Hugo Broos, has boldly expressed his team’s aspiration to reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations as they gear up to face the Super Eagles in the semi-final at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake on Wednesday night.

While the Super Eagles are considered favorites heading into the game, Broos is optimistic about his side’s ability to upset Jose Peseiro’s men.

“Reaching the semifinal is very special for South African football,” commented the experienced Belgian coach, who previously led Cameroon to victory in the 2017 AFCON. Reflecting on their journey to the semi-finals, Broos emphasized the significance of the penalty shootout, highlighting the players’ special training that prepared them for such critical moments.

“When we have a goalkeeper who stops 4 penalty kicks, this is not luck but a lot of hard work,” Broos asserted, emphasizing the dedication and training that contributed to their success.

Acknowledging the skepticism surrounding South Africa’s potential in the tournament, Broos stated, “Not many people in South Africa believed in this team, but we believed in it, and the players believed in themselves as well.” He highlighted that reaching the semi-finals is an accomplishment in itself and a positive development for South African football.

Reflecting on the pressure in the previous match, Broos noted the difference in performance but underscored the importance of qualifying. He acknowledged the unique challenges faced in the match but expressed confidence in his team’s ability to deliver a surprise against Nigeria.

“Maybe we can make a surprise (vs Nigeria) now,” Broos concluded, instilling hope and determination in his team as they aim for an unexpected victory against the Super Eagles in the upcoming crucial encounter.
