The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Lagos State has taken a significant step toward the upcoming Surulere Federal Constituency I by-election on February 3rd. The Commission received sensitive materials from the Central Bank of Nigeria, a move confirmed by Prof. Ayobami Salami, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state.
During a press briefing, Prof. Salami emphasized INEC’s full preparedness for the election, stating, “We have taken delivery of the sensitive materials today. We are in the last phase of the process of the by-election.” He further assured the transparency of the process, inviting representatives of political parties and security agencies to witness the exercise.
The sensitive materials, including ballot papers and result sheets, are reported to be secure and intact. Prof. Salami reiterated the Commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election on Saturday and called for the cooperation and support of stakeholders.
The onward distribution of materials from the state headquarters to the six wards and 258 polling units constituting Surulere Federal Constituency I is scheduled to commence on Friday. The by-election was triggered by the resignation of the former occupant, Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila, who, after winning, was appointed as the Chief of Staff by President Bola Tinubu. In total, 12 candidates from various political parties will be contesting for the vacant seat.
