President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, has voiced strong criticism regarding the selection process of state governors appointed as members of the 37-member Tripartite Committee on Minimum Wage.
Ajaero expressed concern that many governors on the panel do not adhere to the current minimum wage regulations. He argued that governors in full compliance with the minimum wage are not adequately represented.
The committee was inaugurated by Vice President Kashim Shettima, who emphasized the urgency of reaching a resolution before the expiration of the current N30,000 minimum wage in March 2024. In his opening address, Shettima urged members to work swiftly and submit their reports promptly.
The President of the NLC revealed that there are worries about the country’s dependence on the dollar for transactions, expressing helplessness in addressing the issue as it is a policy of the Federal Government. Ajaero stressed the need for the government to take action on the matter.
