The Federal Government is set to enforce sanctions on vessels violating International Maritime Organization sulphur regulations, revealed the Minister of Maritime and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. He emphasized the procurement of tools to enhance the Nigerian Ports Authority’s capacity for sulphur analysis and the establishment of a sanction regime for non-compliant vessels.
Oyetola commended the transition to eco-friendly natural gas by ships, citing Nigeria’s high-quality, low-sulphur gas. The government aims to minimize air pollution in shipping and recognizes the role of shipping in global decarbonization efforts.
The largest container vessel, ‘CMA CGM Scandola,’ recently arrived at Lekki Port, Lagos, powered by Liquefied Natural Gas. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu highlighted the significance of this achievement for Nigeria’s global logistics marine business, emphasizing the nation’s entry into this privileged industry. The Managing Director of Lekki Deep Seaport, Du Rougang, expressed the port’s commitment to playing a major role in Nigeria’s maritime industry.
