The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, recently paid a visit to Ruth Ogunleye, a female soldier currently undergoing rehabilitation, in response to a viral video where Ogunleye accused senior officers of intimidation and harassment. Ohanenye shared the positive update on her social media platforms, expressing satisfaction with Ogunleye’s notable improvement and positive outlook.
Acknowledging the commendable care provided by the Army, Minister Ohanenye extended appreciation to Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen Taoreed Lagbaja for the high-quality attention given to Ogunleye. The Ministry took additional steps to support Ogunleye’s recovery by deploying a dedicated desk officer to monitor her progress. This initiative aligns with the Ministry’s overarching mandate to promote the welfare and wellbeing of Nigerian women, particularly those facing challenging circumstances.
In the viral video, Ruth Ogunleye bravely shared her experiences of stigmatization, intimidation, and sexual harassment. She specifically pointed fingers at a colonel and two senior officers, alleging disruptions in her life after rejecting the colonel’s advances. Notably, she mentioned the halting of her salary in February 2023 as a consequence of the situation.
